Volunteering Opportunities – Pear Picking this Saturday 3rd October

DSC01088

Dear all

We have nearly come to the end of our apple picking for this season, however we still have a lot of pears to pick! We are picking once again at Northfields allotments this Saturday 3rd October at 10.30am. If you are interested in coming along please arrive by 10.30am sharp at the entrance gates by the bus stop on Northfields Avenue. We will supply all the equipment just come suitably dressed for picking on a muddy allotment! If you are unfamiliar with Northfields Allotments they are run by ‘Pathways’ so this is the signage you will see and they are surrounded by green metal fencing along part of Mattock Lane at the Lido Junction end and down Northfields Avenue.

The pear trees are easy to get to so will suit small children as the allotment is also secure. Some lifting is involved, and of course the picking of pears from the tree!

Hope to see you there.

Pauly picking apples! And only 3 1/2 too!

Hi all

We have some early apples to pick from our trees at Northfields allotments, so if you have any free time over this weekend why not drop me a line and let me know your availability. It doesn’t matter if you only have an hour, there’s still a lot of picking that can be done in this amount of time! Email Diane at wenabundance@gmail.com

Volunteering day at our Orchard in Walmer Gardens – Saturday 26th September

Due toHyacinthoides_non-scripta_(Common_Bluebell) the success of our clear up days we are holding another one on Saturday 26th September from 10am – 12pm.  This time we are going to be planting some spring bulbs to help attract the bees (Ealing Transition have their beehives at the back of the Orchard)

Walmer Gardens Map (head for the entrance to April Cottage, it looks like you are walking up the drive and then turn left.  The Orchard is enclosed in fencing)

If you are free then come along to Walmer Gardens with your garden gloves, secateurs and/or loppers. Clearing is quite hard work and only suitable for children over the age of 12. Please contact Diane Gill on wenabundance@gmail.com or 07736857700 for further information, otherwise we will see you there on the day!
If you can’t help with clearing, but have a car and would be willing to take garden rubbish to the dump please contact me or turn up at the Orchard on the day.

We are also looking for more expert volunteers, so if you know a bit about apples/pears and could help with picks in the next couple of weeks please email me.

Many thanks and hope to see you on the day!

London Orchard Project – Tree Grafting Workshop – Saturday 25th February 2012

This Saturday 25th Feb our friends at Stepney City Farm will be running a fruit tree grafting workshop.  Learn how to create a grafted fruit tree from nursery-grown root-stock and scion (cuttings) we’ve gathered from orchards across London.Grafting is the technique by which apple trees are propagated.  Through grafting we can combine the root-stock we want (which determines the health and eventual height of the tree) with our favourite apple varieties.  So come along to the farm and learn how to do this yourself. The workshop will be led by David Lopez of Stepney City Farm, and costs £5.  To book a place contact david@stepneycityfarm.org.

When: Saturday 25th February 2012,

Workshop 11am – 12pm (followed by optional volunteering session 1pm  – 4pm)

Where: Stepney City Farm, Stepney Way, London E1 3DG

Cost: £5 (£3 concessionary)

-3.5c and we were still up for pruning our West Ealing Orchard

Oh yes we at WEN Abundance and Ealing Transition are a hardy lot!  We braved the freezing cold on Saturday 4th February to be part of a pruning workshop at our lovely little Orchard at Walmer Gardens. The London Orchard Project are doing a fantastic job helping us and brought in an expert to guide us through the day.

With some dedicated volunteers and support – including Jon Skoyles, Ealing Park Ranger, this Orchard has undergone a complete transformation. It will take a couple more years of pruning, planting and caring for the place but we know it will be worth bringing this place back to life.

Next up is the beehive Ealing Transition will be setting up around April – I’ll let you know exact dates when confirmed should anyone be interested in coming along.

Here are some pictures of the day.

Walmer Gardens Orchard – Update

We have our first volunteering event of 2012 and wow what a lot of volunteers!  A great start to the year; I hope this continues. We have taken on this small rather run down Orchard that needs a good tidy up before we start pruning. A team of us will be there this Saturday 14th January to do this job, ably helped by The London Orchard Project who will be providing expert help and advice on the day. One of the Ealing Park Rangers will also be there to help out and support us too.  We will then be holding a pruning workshop there on the 4th February to learn basic pruning techniques and then prune the 8 trees.

I’ll post some pictures up of the day so you can have a look at the Orchard and the lovely team of volunteers too!
